Our idea for the presentation was to do a kind of performative presentation. Where we use mixed media and spoken word. The main topic was still studs and the history behind it and make people aware of it. But it was also about visibility, hypervisibility and not being visible. Where we as black women share our view on this through poetry.
The term Stud' is used specifically for the black lesbian community, so it is not equivalent to the word Butch. White lesbians often define themselves as studs and this is then taken as appropriating the black experience, but in addition can be seen as problematic. For our project, we wanted to delve deeper into the terms lesbians and queer woman themselves use, terms that often have a rich history and are not talked about enough. But it's also important to point out that as a stud you are very visible. To be a black woman it means that you are almost invisible, but as a stud you are hypervisible. By using photography, graphic design and poetry,(mixed media.) We try to make people understand that the word 'Stud’ isn't inclusive.
